We’ve broken the process of deciding the best breast implants for you into 5 easy steps!
Saline Implants or Silicone Implants
STEP 1 –
Once we’ve established that this is the best surgery for you, the first step is to discuss the different implant types. There are two breast implant options available in Toronto and Whitby: saline and cohesive silicone gel.
There are two breast implant options available in Toronto and Whitby: saline and cohesive silicone gel.
- Saline implants: These are filled with sterile saline liquid and can be inserted into the breast pocket via a very small incision, then filled once inside. They tend to be less expensive but also feel less natural than silicone-gel implants, depending on natural breast tissue. This type of implant is usually not recommended for thin individuals because of its potential rippling effect through thin skin.
- Silicone implants: The other option is silicone gel implants which come pre-filled with silicone gel to provide a natural look and feel. They are available at a slightly higher price point and are ideal to ensure natural movement and minimize rippling. However, silicone gel implants do require a slightly larger incision for insertion.
Despite the appeal of silicone gel implants, saline breast implants remain a popular choice among our patients. The final choice between implants for your surgery will be determined by your personal preferences and discussion with Dr. Golger or Dr. Romy.
Breast Implant Sizes
STEP 2 –
After deciding the types of implants we’ll use, we’ll decide the implant size. Dr. Golger and Dr. Romy will be able to give you their expert recommendations on what size they think will look best based on the proportions of your body. However, patients all have opinions on what size they think will look best. This is a fun process that will be based on your surgical goals. It’s important to note that breast implant sizes and bra cup sizes are not always the same.
Breast Implant Shape
STEP 3 –
Women have different goals with why they want breast implants. Some women desire more fullness, while others simply want larger breasts. There are different options for choosing implant sizes. For the most part, round implants are the most popular. The other option is teardrop implants, which are designed for a more natural feel. During the consultation, your expert breast surgeons will be able to go over the differences and their recommendations based on your preferences.
Implant Placement
STEP – 4
Next, we’ll decide if the implants are going to go on top or beneath the muscle. The surgeons will want to first determine if you have an adequate amount of breast tissue. Women with not a lot of breast tissue typically get the implants below the muscle. If there is a good amount of tissue, putting the implants on top of the chest can add more cleavage. While adding them below the muscle will give a more natural look. These decisions are always a lot of fun for the patient and we’ll be here every step of the way to give our recommendations.
Incision Placement
STEP 5 –
Lastly, we’ll want to decide the incision placement. Typically once we have an idea of the implant placement and shape, we’ll have a good idea of the incision placement. There are typically two options when it comes to placement — inframammary or periareolar. The Inframammary placement goes below the breast crease, while the other option, periareolar will go around the nipple. The other two options are transaxillary, which goes through the armpit, and umbilical which goes through the belly button — neither of these options are as common in our practice.
All incisions will leave scars, but because of the experience of both Dr. Golger and Dr. Romy, the scars will be hardly noticeable.
What to Expect on the Day of Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Breast augmentation in Toronto and Whitby is a relatively simple, outpatient procedure performed in our state of the art, surgical facility.
The procedure is completed under general anesthesia with intravenous sedation. Dr. Golger and Dr. Romy create small skin incisions in different locations, including beneath the breast, around the areola, or in the underarm for inconspicuous and minimal scarring. Next, a pocket for the breast implant is created and the breast implant is gently inserted underneath the muscles of the chest and the breast tissue. Finally, absorbable sutures are used to close the small incisions and a dressing is applied over the wound for effective healing. Once the breast enlargement surgery is over, you will be fitted with a post-operative bra and allowed to recover in the recovery room for approximately one hour before making your way home.
Enhance Your Breast Procedure
We’re often asked about combining breast augmentation with other breast procedures. This can be done and will often enhance the procedure depending on your surgical goals and body type. The most popular combination is a breast lift with implants. This is usually a great option for women whose breasts have begun to sag due to childbirth, weight loss, or age.
We are also known for our Toronto mommy makeover procedure, in which women combine multiple surgeries after giving birth. Typically during these procedures, we combine breast implants with a tummy tuck.
Breast Augmentation Recovery Process
After spending adequate time in our recovery room, you will be allowed to go home to begin your very simple recovery process.
General post-operative instructions focus on receiving plenty of rest with limited arm movement to help minimize discomfort. Patients are generally asked to avoid upper body exercise or activities that increase heart rate and blood pressure, for two to three weeks. Following your surgery, uncomfortable pressure, tightness, and swelling in your chest tissue may occur. This is effectively treated with oral pain medication and typically subsides within one to two weeks. Some have reported a numbing sensation in their nipples, which is not uncommon and can last for one to two months post-op, however, this feeling does not persist for most patients. While complications during recovery for breast surgery are rare, you can minimize risk by carefully following the post-operative care instructions provided by our plastic surgeons.
Although the results of your surgery are visible immediately after the procedure, it will be difficult for you to enjoy and appreciate your new body until you have fully recovered and the swelling has diminished. Therefore, patience is important and we promise that the final outcome will be well worth the wait.
How to Find the Best Toronto Breast Augmentation Surgeon For You
*The importance of choosing a well-reputed and qualified surgeon for the job
In fact, of the most important choices, you will make for your surgery, is which plastic surgeon is right for you. Aside from medical experience, a surgeon’s communication skills are also an important factor in your decision-making process. Making sure that the surgeon takes time to answer all your questions without feeling rushed or pressured, is the best way to make sure you’re comfortable with your choice and ready for your exciting transformation.
Three Tips to Choose Your Breast Augmentation Surgeon
- Preparation — Being well prepared with a list of questions and taking your time to get to know the surgeon, can give you peace of mind that you’ve chosen the best surgeon for the job. - Price — Don’t choose your surgeon based on price. Many people are lured by clinics offering various discounts and promotions for breast augmentation procedures. Even though the price tag may seem lower in these scenarios, it does not necessarily mean that it is the best choice for you.
