Gummy Bear Breast Implants

As part of a new wave of cosmetic enhancement, women are expressing huge amounts of interest in the latest generation of silicone breast implants: Gummy Bear implants. Breast augmentation has been one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures all over the world, with most of them being performed in the U.S. For women who have been interested in getting breast implants, they had to resort to the traditional saline and silicone options – until now.

What Are Gummy Bear Breast Implants?

The term “gummy bear breast implant” was coined by Dr. Grant Stevens, a plastic surgeon in Marina Del Rey, California. He states that he named the implants after the chewy, gummy candies because the implants retained their shape and remained stable even when cut in half, much like the candies. These implants are made from cohesive gel and they are able to keep their shape and form.

Gummy bear breast implants are manufactured by Sientra, a company dedicated to cosmetic surgery. These implants were given the stamp of approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March 2012. They are also produced by Allergan and Mentor, but none of these manufacturers refer to these implants as gummy bear implants.

Characteristics of Gummy Bear Implants

Gummy bear implants are highly cohesive gel implants. They are made of a semi-solid gel that is enclosed by an outer shell very similar to the fourth-generation cohesive gel implants. Inside the outer shell is a semi-solid viscous silicone gel that has strong form-retention properties, making this a one-of-a-kind implant.

When compared to traditional silicone gel implants, the consistency of the silicone gel inside the gummy bear implant’s shell is much thicker. This makes these implants firmer than their traditional counterparts and thus less likely to rupture.

They also provide better shape and are not necessarily round. The shape of these implants shows increased projection at the base and appears more tapered at the top. They have been designed to take on the shape of a teardrop with the intention to replicate the shape of natural breasts. The firm silicone gel in the gummy bear implants helps maintain this shape.

Are There Risks Involved with Gummy Bear Implants?

As with all kinds of breast implants, gummy bear implants have their advantages as well as disadvantages. It is advised that every patient must discuss with her doctor and be aware of the benefits and potential risks before undergoing the procedure.

One of the biggest advantages of these implants is that they are form-stable and can mimic the shape of natural breasts by giving the bottom of the breast more fullness. The implant also exhibits less wrinkling, as it is comprised of firmer gel; this makes breast skin rippling much less likely to occur.
