If a patient has stretched abdominal muscles as a result of pregnancy and not weight gain alone, the fascia (fibrous tissue around the muscles) may be loose and can usually be tightened with the help of an abdominoplasty. If the fascia is already tight at the time of surgery, it may not be tightened.

If the fascia is already tight, tightening it further during abdominoplasty will actually loosen it again because of pressure from the inside. In addition, if the fascia is too tight, it can eventually result in hernias or tearing of the muscle covering.
